Tar is short for tarpaulin which is a sailor's hat that has been waterproofed with tar or wax. Therefore, the word Tar has been used to refer to a: SAILOR, MARINER, NAVIGATOR, SEAFARER, SEAMAN, SHIPMAN, SWAB, or PIRATE.
